House Education Committee Chairman Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) joined Governor Mitch Daniels, other state legislators, reform advocates, and thousands of students, parents and teachers at the Statehouse Wednesday to celebrate education reform at the Education Reform Rocks Rally. Rep. Behning was presented with the award “Education Reformer of the Year” for his outstanding work in bringing student-centered education reform to Indiana.
“It is an honor to receive this award, and I am encouraged to see so many parents and students here today supporting school choice,” said Rep. Behning. “Bringing school choice to Indiana was not always easy, but the turnout today shows the enthusiasm for family choice in our communities.”
The organizers of the rally commended Rep. Behning for being a constant champion of Indiana students and for his student-centered reforms passed during the 2011 legislative session.
“With the legislation passed last session, we have allowed all students the opportunity to receive a high quality education regardless of their ZIP code,” said Rep. Behning. “The journey of education reform in Indiana has only just begun. This rally serves as a reminder that Hoosiers want to see comprehensive education reform in our state. We must continue to help make all students ready to compete in the 21st century job market.”
The theme of today’s rally was “Demand Great Schools.” This theme expresses the organizers’ desires to see a continued focus on striving for education excellence through quality teachers, effective schools, and empowered parents.
