[R 59] Rep. Smith makes Indiana's roadways safer (1/31/2012)

Rep. Milo Smith (R- Columbus) authored House Bill 1197, which will improve the safety of roads across the state of Indiana. The bill establishes guidelines and requirements for those who operate mopeds.

“This bill is simply about public safety and accountability,” said Rep. Smith

House Bill 1197 has the following provisions:

• Provides that a moped operated on a highway must be titled and registered with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
• Requires the operator of a moped on a highway to have an identification card or driver's license in the operator's immediate possession when operating the moped.
• Requires certain individuals to file accident reports after an accident involving a moped.

“This bill will resolve many issues that have arisen due to moped accidents and will expand safety for all Hoosier motorists,” said Rep. Smith.  “Many other states have already addressed theses issues. It is imperative that we continually update our laws to keep up with new and emerging technologies.”

House Bill 1197 was heard on the House floor on Tuesday and passed by a 77 to 29 vote.
