STATEHOUSE (Sept. 24, 2021) –Union Mills' Mary Deering was among 21 older Indiana residents honored with this year's Golden Hoosier Award for his volunteer service in the community, according to State Rep. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie).

Deering, a retired registered nurse, chaired numerous projects for the Union Mills Lions Club Inc. and Union Mills Conservation Club for several decades.  Her work with the conservation club reshaped what used to be a swamp into a park, which is now a community center. Deering is currently a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 295 in Union Mills. She also helps organize blood drives, eyeglass collections, mission trips to Mexico, community dinners, fundraisers for children, patriotic youth programs, relief funds for veteran and military families, and much more.

“Public servants like Mary are a vital part of our community and make it a better place to live,” Pressel said. “Her commitment to serving others through local organizations is inspiring and deserves to be recognized with this award."

The Golden Hoosier Award was established in 2008 to honor older Hoosiers whose volunteer work and commitment to their communities have made a positive impact. To be eligible, nominees must be age 65 or older and have volunteered for at least the past three years.

The award is presented by Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch in partnership with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, and is the highest honor given to Hoosier seniors. To date, more than 260 citizens have received the Golden Hoosier Award.

This year's Golden Hoosier Award recipients were honored through a video ceremony, which can be viewed at in.gov/lg.
