STATEHOUSE (Sept. 27, 2021) – Parker City's Linda Morris was among 21 older Indiana residents honored with this year's Golden Hoosier Award for her volunteer service in the community, according to State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City).
Since retiring from teaching in 2006, Morris volunteers as a board member for the Historic Farmland USA Community Center, where she oversees daily operations and remodeling of the historic building's storage area. Morris also writes grants to help the community center continue providing entertainment for area residents. In 2015, a group including Morris established Randolph County's only senior center to provide meals, exercise classes and other programs for older Hoosiers. As a member of the LifeStream Services Advisory Council, she helps bring nutrition and wellness education, and exercise activities to Randolph County seniors. Morris also tutors county students in need for free.
"Linda's service to those younger and older in Randolph County knows no bounds," Prescott said. "After ending her teaching career, she has dedicated her time to making sure her community is thriving, whether that be by organizing exercise classes for seniors or offering free tutoring for rural students. Linda has been, and will continue to be, an important part of our community, and I can think of no one more deserving of the Golden Hoosier Award."
The Golden Hoosier Award was established in 2008 to honor older Hoosiers whose volunteer work and commitment to their communities have made a positive impact. To be eligible, nominees must be age 65 or older and have volunteered for at least the past three years.
The award is presented by Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch in partnership with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, and is the highest honor given to Hoosier seniors. To date, more than 260 citizens have received the Golden Hoosier Award.
This year's Golden Hoosier Award recipients were honored through a video ceremony, which can be viewed at in.gov/lg.
