STATEHOUSE (April 13, 2021) – Legislation to improve civic engagement among young Hoosiers is now law, according to State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City).
House Enrolled Act 1384, which Prescott supported, requires students to take a semester-long civics education course in grades 6, 7 or 8. He said young Hoosiers usually take a government class during their senior year of high school, but this legislation is designed to reach students earlier.
"Many U.S. citizens lack the basic knowledge and understanding of how their government functions," Prescott said. "Our democracy is dependent on the participation and engagement of its citizens. Learning about the Constitution and about all levels of our representative government is vital to our country's future."
This legislation comes out of a recommendation from the Civics Education Task Force led by Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch.
