STATEHOUSE (Nov. 8, 2023) – Significant state funding is in route to Porter County communities to help complete road and bridge projects, according to area legislators.

State funding is available for local projects through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, including road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items. In total, over 180 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $91 million in state matching grants.

"This grant is a great way for smaller rural communities to tackle larger projects," said State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron). "With additional funding, communities can begin repairs or construction to improve their roadways, and other projects."

Area grant recipients include:

  • Beverly Shores, $41,430;
  • Burns Harbor, $970,181;
  • Chesterton, $545,062;
  • Dune Acres, $67,423;
  • Portage, $52,663;
  • Porter, $561,310; and
  • Porter County, $125,876.

"Indiana roads are constantly used by local Hoosiers, businesses and visitors from all across the country, and they are vital to several key industries that boost our economy," said State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point). "By investing in ongoing infrastructure maintenance and improvement projects, we help keep motorists safe as they travel to and through our great state."

To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.2 billion to improve local roads and bridges.

"Communities in Northwest Indiana are growing, which means we have to keep our focus on infrastructure maintenance and improvements to support that growth," said State Rep. Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso). "With the state's successful Community Crossings grant program, communities large and small are partnering with the state to move ahead on much-needed projects."
