STATEHOUSE (March 7, 2025) – Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program awarded local communities over $6.9 million in state funding for local road and bridge projects, according to Porter County legislators.
The Community Crossings Matching Grant Program provides local communities funding for road reconstruction, bridge preservation, intersection improvements and other projects. This year, 245 Indiana communities will receive more than $200 million in state matching grants.
"These matching grants are so important for smaller communities that need assistance for necessary road maintenance and infrastructure projects," said State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron). "It's encouraging to see local areas receiving the funds they need to move forward on projects."
Indiana was recently ranked as the best state in the nation for overall road conditions by Consumer Affairs, noting our low rate of traffic fatalities and quality of roads.
Area grant recipients include:
"Roads and bridges are integral to the growth of our towns and cities," said State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point). "These grants are a great way for our communities to tackle larger, much-needed projects to increase accessibility and opportunity."
State Rep. Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso) said to qualify for funding, smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities must provide a 50 percent match. The state requires 50 percent of available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or less. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $2 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
"Roads and bridges are the arteries connecting major cities to rural areas, distributing resources and supporting everyday life," Soliday said. "By investing in improvements and new infrastructure projects, we are ensuring the safety and sustainability of Indiana's roadways."
