STATEHOUSE (Aug. 18, 2022) – The longstanding John Dick and Pollaro Farm in Valparaiso recently received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award for being in operation since 1901, according to State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) and State Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso).
"Hoosier farmers contribute to the economic well-being of our communities and state," said Aylesworth, vice chair of the House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. "It takes hard work and dedication to keep an operation going for over a century, and I congratulate the John Dick and Pollaro Farm on their achievement."
The John Dick and Pollaro Farm was among more than 100 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.
"Owning and operating a farm for over 100 years is no small feat," Charbonneau said. "The amount of time and effort that goes into maintaining a farm is incredible, and I am grateful to have farms like the John Dick and Pollaro Farm in our community."
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. Since its inception in 1976, more than 5,800 farms received the designation as Hoosier Homesteads.
