Note to the press: Please include the following statement from State Reps. Shane Lindauer (R-Jasper) and Cindy Ledbetter (R-Newburgh) in your coverage of Indiana Auditor of State Tera Klutz announcing the state will end the fiscal year with $1.1 billion more than expected in reserves, triggering an automatic taxpayer refund. While the final refund amount will not be calculated until later this year, early estimates suggest the refund could be as high as $170 per individual filer or $340 for joint filers. In Indiana, a state surplus of more than 10% of the next year's budget is required to be split, with half dedicated to pay down pension obligations and the other half given back to taxpayers. According to the report, about $545 million will go to taxpayers and another $545 million toward pension liabilities. This will be the second time Hoosiers will receive an automatic taxpayer refund since the law passed in 2011.
STATEHOUSE (July 15, 2021) – "Not only did lawmakers make historic investments in Hoosier priorities this session, but now we are putting more money back in the pockets of Indiana taxpayers. This tax refund is just another victory for Hoosiers who have come to expect a fiscally responsible budget that pays down debt and saves for the next rainy day. Our conservative policies have propelled Indiana's economy forward, growing our economy beyond our expectations and laying the foundation for these refunds," said State Rep. Cindy Ledbetter (R-Newburgh)
"This tax refund affirms what many of us have known for decades – Indiana's conservative policies work. Our strong economy did not happen by accident. This is directly tied to Indiana's years of fiscal responsibility and refusing to live beyond our means. This automatic tax refund will put money back where it belongs – in the hands of hardworking Hoosier taxpayers," said State Rep. Shane Lindauer (R-Jasper).
