STATEHOUSE (Jan. 30, 2023) — State Rep. Kyle Pierce (R-Anderson) co-authored legislation that would require Indiana high school students to complete a financial literacy course before graduating.
Under the proposed legislation, students starting with the Class of 2027 would have to successfully complete a personal financial responsibility course before being able to graduate from a public, charter or state-accredited nonpublic school.
"Financial skills like budgeting and investing need to be learned early in life," Pierce said. "By completing a financial literacy course, young Hoosiers would be more familiar with these important concepts so that they can avoid problems as adults."
According to Pierce, financial literacy course topics could include spending and saving, opening and managing bank accounts, debt management, tax returns, loan applications, credit, and credit scores. The State Board of Education would be tasked with establishing the curriculum.
