STATEHOUSE (Oct. 15, 2019) – Communities in Clark and Floyd counties received over $1.4 million in state matching grants to accelerate road and bridge improvements, according to State Reps. Ed Clere (R-New Albany) and Karen Engleman (R-Georgetown).

This local funding is part of the nearly $100 million recently awarded to Indiana cities, towns and counties through the Community Crossings Matching Grant program, which is now in its fourth year. The grants are made available through the Indiana Department of Transportation and funded through the state budget.

“Our local officials can now make significant enhancements to our roads, resulting in long-term benefits,” Clere said. “This funding will go toward improving road conditions, which will support job growth and quality of life. Indiana is rated as one of the best states for addressing infrastructure, and these grants will help maintain that status.”

As part of the program, some communities in the area were awarded grants, including:

  • Clarksville, $300,395;
  • Georgetown, $150,418; and
  • Sellersburg, $963,783.

Engleman said smaller municipalities must provide a match of 25% in local funds, while large communities must provide a 50% match.

“These funds can help implement a variety of local road plans,” Engleman said. “Projects can include repaving streets, design improvements and boost other aspects of our roads local engineers have spotted to make our infrastructure better. These state dollars help our local governments move forward on plans more quickly.”

Since 2017, state road investment is up 50% as Indiana has dedicated $3 billion to road and bridge projects across the state.
