STATEHOUSE (Oct. 11, 2019) – Local communities were recently awarded over $1.1 million in state matching grants to accelerate road and bridge improvements, according to State Reps. Ron Bacon (R-Chandler) and Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville).

Nearly $100 million was awarded to Indiana cities, towns and counties through the Community Crossings Matching Grant program, which is now in its fourth year. The grants are made available through the Indiana Department of Transportation as a result of a law Bacon and Sullivan supported in 2016, and funded through the state budget.

“This funding will benefit our area by speeding up vital road construction and repair projects that make it easier to travel and conduct business,” Bacon said. “Indiana is committed to strengthening its infrastructure and this program is an investment in our future.”

As part of the program, Warrick County received $506,774 for local road projects, with Boonville awarded $561,020 and Elberfeld receiving $83,630.

“Our long-term investment and commitment to roads and bridges resulted in Indiana being named the top state in the nation for infrastructure by CNBC,” Sullivan, chair of the House Roads and Transportation Committee, said. “These funds will help our communities improve our local roads and bridges, ensuring we have a strong foundation for the future.”

Sullivan said grant funding can be used toward road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage. Smaller municipalities must provide a match of 25% in local funds, while large communities must provide a 50% match.

Since 2017, state road investment is up 50% as Indiana has dedicated $3 billion to road and bridge projects across the state.
