SE (Aug. 9, 2021) – State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) on Aug. 5, 2021 presented Merrillville resident Brian Rock an Outstanding Hoosier Award for delivering good-will to others in need.
Rock, a U.S. Army veteran and co-owner of Elevated Pie Co., travels to natural disaster sites throughout the country and distributes free, hand-tossed pizzas to those in the area. He also sells his pizzas at local farmers markets to raise money for those in need.
"Brian is a hero and an amazing person who creatively uses his skills to help others," Olthoff said. "He is an example of what we could all do if we challenged ourselves to make a difference in the world. Food, in a time of crisis, can be a comfort. We should all strive to be more like Brian."
Olthoff created the Outstanding Hoosier Award to recognize community members who make Lake County a better place to live, work and raise a family. Award recipients are recognized with a special certificate and highlighted in Olthoff's official e-newsletters.
Rock is the first recipient of this award. Olthoff said residents can learn more and submit a nomination by visiting in.gov/h19.
