Free, fair and secure elections are vital to our democracy. Every Hoosier voter should be confident that their ballot is counted, and election results are accurate and free of interference.
Our communities are fortunate to have dedicated election officers and poll workers who are behind the scenes making sure elections run smoothly. With hardworking staff, strong laws and ongoing efforts to ensure secure elections, Hoosier voters can trust the results and vote with confidence.
To beef up security even more, I co-authored a new law to ensure all Indiana electronic voting machines are equipped with a voter-verifiable paper audit trail by the 2024 election. Every voter will be able to verify their ballot on a printout before casting their vote. This step will offer assurances that electronically recorded votes are accurate.
This new law also makes changes to the absentee voting process by requiring anyone requesting an online absentee ballot application through the statewide voter portal to provide either their driver's license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number. This extra layer of identification will help guard against fraud without creating an unnecessary burden for voters.
These added safeguards should increase transparency and accountability in our elections, and continue our state's reputation for secure voting.
Indiana's primary election will be held on Tuesday, May 3. While the registration deadline has passed, voters can find out where to vote and learn more about who will be on local ballots by visiting indianavoters.com.
For questions about the election or to find out early voting days, contact the Vanderburgh County Elections Office at 812-435-5122 or the Warrick County Elections Office at 812-897-6161.
As a member of the House Elections and Apportionment Committee, I understand free, fair and secure elections are vital to our democracy. In Indiana, we will continue taking steps to protect the process and ensure results are accurate. The voter verified paper audit trail system soon to be implemented in our state will help with these efforts so Hoosiers can vote with confidence.
