O'Brien: Securing big wins for Southwest Indiana

As a representative of the Evansville area and the Southwest region of the state, I value every opportunity to engage with constituents, hear their concerns and provide updates on the legislative session. Consistent and honest communication is vital to ensuring that our community's voice is well-represented at the Statehouse.

This session alone, I have participated in more than half a dozen public meetings, town halls and legislative forums to hear from residents and be accessible to the people I serve. From legislative breakfasts and roundtables to question and answer sessions with students and community organizations, these events have provided an opportunity for me to directly engage with constituents in District 78 and the surrounding area. I've attended multiple legislative breakfasts at Ivy Tech in Evansville (January and March), joined a discussion with a political science class at the University of Southern Indiana (January) and attended legislative updates and cracker barrel sessions hosted by the local Farm Bureau in Southwest Indiana (February and March) as well as a roundtable with our Evansville Regional Economic Partnership (February). I welcome these opportunities to discuss the key issues facing our district.

I appreciate the organizations and community members who work to facilitate these discussions. I also take these conversations and feedback directly back to the Statehouse to work on shared priorities and move the ball forward for our region. I have been working on legislation to help accelerate sports tourism in our region by allowing additional funding capture for the Evansville Professional Sports and Convention Development Area, which has been added into our House-passed version of the state budget. It has the potential of keeping $90 million in revenue in the Evansville area. I also authored House Bill 1453 which establishes the Pediatric Cancer Research and Treatment Grant program to encourage innovative research into novel forms of cancer treatment to help Hoosier families. This bill unanimously passed the House of Representatives. As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, and the Chair of the K-12 Subcommittee, I have also been working on the state budget this session to ensure Indiana remains a fiscally responsible and prosperous state.

Constituent feedback is essential to the legislative process. Whether at a local event, a visit to my office at the Statehouse or contacting me through phone or email, I welcome your thoughts, questions or concerns. I encourage you to reach out to me at in.gov/h78 or by calling 317-232-9759. Your input helps shape the policies that impact our district, and I will continue working hard to serve you and our communities at the Statehouse.
