STATEHOUSE (June 25, 2021) – Northwest Indiana legislators recently received appointments to serve on interim study committees.

Throughout the summer and fall, Indiana state legislators serve on interim study committees where they work on policy, examine top issues, gather testimony and recommend legislation ahead of the legislative session kicking off in January.

State Rep. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) will serve as vice chair of the Interim Study Committee on Roads and Transportation.

"Our infrastructure is critical to the success of our economy and can boost Hoosiers' quality of life," Pressel said. "This summer, I look forward to focusing on how we can continue maintaining and improving Indiana's roads and bridges not only in the Region, but across the state."

Pressel will also serve on the Nonemergency Medical Transportation Commission and the Public Highway Private Enterprise Review Board.

State Rep. Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso) will serve as vice chair of the Interim Study Committee on Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications, and as a member of the Governor's Security Council.

"Energy policies are complex and evolve based on new technologies and consumer needs," Soliday said. "It's important these issues are continuously vetted and studied, especially since utilities impact our daily lives and economy."

Soliday will also co-chair the 21st Century Energy Policy Development Task Force, and the Wastewater Infrastructure Investment and Service to Underserved Areas Task Force. The Wastewater Task Force was created to deal with critical needs in failing and antiquated wastewater treatment systems before they become health hazards.

State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) will serve on the Interim Study Committee on Child Services.

"This session, I supported legislation establishing the Interim Study Committee on Child Services to look at how Indiana can better protect our most vulnerable," Olthoff said. "The committee will review state and local child fatality reports, and other issues related to child safety and service programs like foster care to find any areas that could be improved."

Members of the public are welcomed to attend and testify at committee hearings, which typically occur at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Hearings are also livestreamed and archived online at iga.in.gov, where committee calendars and meeting agendas are posted.
