STATEHOUSE (Oct. 20, 2021) — Nontraditional female students in Indiana can apply for a scholarship through the Political Organization for Women's Education and Representation before the Nov. 15 deadline, according Northwest Indiana lawmakers.

State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) said scholarship recipients could include women who are returning to school after a hiatus, changing careers, seeking advancement in their career or work life, and stay-at-home moms entering the workplace who are in need of additional education or training. This scholarship is not intended for recent high school graduates or women who are eligible for or have already received other significant financial aid.

"For Hoosier women looking to skill up, this scholarship is a great way to get the additional education or training needed to do so," Aylesworth said. "There are job opportunities available throughout the state and women can gain the valuable skills required to qualify and get hired for these positions."

A bipartisan selection committee awards 18 scholarships – two from each congressional district – for $750 each. The scholarship check will be made directly to the institution with instructions to apply the funds to the student’s current account to pay for school tuition, books and fees. Qualified applicants include non-traditional female students whose education may have been delayed or interrupted, and the committee will consider financial need, personal vision, service to community, post-education plans.

"The application deadline for this scholarship is quickly approaching and women going to school, changing professions or looking to advance in their career should apply as soon as possible," said State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point), a member of POWER. "We need more hard-working women in the workplace, and education can unlock so many great career opportunities."

The scholarships can be used for the 2022 spring semester. With the application deadline on Nov. 15, scholarship recipients will be announced on Dec. 17, 2021, and granted before Dec. 31, 2021.

"The POWER scholarship is a great way to help pay for college expenses," said State Rep. Hal Slager (R-Schererville). "I encourage all nontraditional female students in northwest Indiana to apply today."
