STATEHOUSE (Aug. 16, 2021) – Whether studying economics, telecommunications or history, local college students and recent graduates can gain valuable hands-on work experience by interning with Indiana House Republicans at the Statehouse in Indianapolis, according to Northwest Indiana lawmakers.

"Interning is a great opportunity to strengthen skills that are valuable in the competitive job market," said State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron). "We also often look to our interns to join our staff full time, whether as legislative assistants, press secretaries or policy analysts. For me, it's always exciting to watch interns grow professionally throughout the years."

State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) said internship positions are open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. Students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, communications and media relations, policy and fiscal policy.

"Interns come from all areas of the state and have various career goals," Olthoff said. "Whether a student plans to attend law school, wants to launch their own business or hopes to become a news anchor, interning with Indiana House Republicans can help build a solid foundation as they set themselves up for success."

Interns will work at the Statehouse in Indianapolis for the duration of the 2022 legislative session, which kicks off in January and concludes mid-March. The paid, spring-semester positions are full time, Monday through Friday. Interns receive biweekly compensation of $750, free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and can earn academic credit through their college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

"Paid internships are hard to come by, and I highly encourage local students and recent graduates to apply soon," said State Rep. Hal Slager (R-Schererville). "The program offers multiple positions, and interns can benefit from working in a department that suits their skillset and fits with their college major."

Slager said to visit indianahouserepublicans.com/internship for more information and to apply before the Oct. 31 deadline.
