STATEHOUSE (April 10, 2024) – Northeast Indiana communities can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by local legislators.
A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.
"It's vital that our roads and bridges are safe and functioning to keep Hoosiers moving," said State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City). "Community Crossings is a great tool for local communities because it opens the door for additional funding, which allows for critical repairs and improvements to be made faster."
Area grant recipients include:
"This round of the Community Crossings funding will go a long way in maintaining local infrastructure," said Smaltz, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for crafting the state budget. "The grant funding will allow local communities to focus on long-term maintenance and ensure our infrastructure is functional and safe for years to come."
"With local communities taking advantage of this grant opportunity, it allows both rural and urban areas to make much-needed updates to roadways, bridges and intersections," said State Rep. Denny Zent (R-Angola). "It's great seeing many communities from Northeast Indiana on the list of award recipients, and in the future I hope more pursue grants."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
