STATEHOUSE (Dec. 16, 2024) – Northeast Indiana legislators recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.

House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms. State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City) was appointed as vice chair of the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee, and will serve as a member of the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee.

"Government operations should prioritize serving the public and promoting transparency," Abbott said. "As vice chair, I will continue working to eliminate regulatory obstacles and advocate for Hoosiers."

State Rep. Tony Isa (R-Angola), elected to his first term in November, will serve as a member of the House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee,  House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee and the House Public Health Committee.

"Committees play a vital role in reviewing bills and hearing feedback from Hoosiers on the challenges they face," Isa said. "I'm looking forward to collaborating with my fellow lawmakers to review proposed bills and supporting legislation that best serve our communities."

State Rep. Ben Smaltz (R-Auburn) was reappointed as chair of the House Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee. He will also serve as a member of the House Elections and Appointment Committee, House Joint Rules Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee. Smaltz said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.

"Ensuring election security is crucial, and Indiana continues to strengthen efforts and safeguard our elections," Smaltz said. "As we prepare for the legislative session, I'm eager to address these issues and represent House District 52 at the Statehouse."

House lawmakers are scheduled to convene at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 8 for the first day of the 2025 legislative session. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
