STATEHOUSE (March 6, 2025) – Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program awarded local communities over $11.1 million in state funding for local road and bridge projects, according to Northeast Indiana legislators.

The Community Crossings Matching Grant Program provides local communities funding for road reconstruction, bridge preservation, intersection improvements and other projects. This year, 245 Indiana communities will receive more than $200 million in state matching grants.

"Roadways are essential for daily life and maintaining them is critical for Hoosiers who want to travel regularly and also to support our local businesses," said State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City). "This funding enables local communities to act faster and make needed repairs and upgrades that may not have otherwise been possible."

Indiana was recently ranked as the best state in the nation for overall road conditions by Consumer Affairs, noting our low rate of traffic fatalities and quality of roads.

Area grant recipients include:

  • Albion, $713,985;
  • Ashley, $441,000;
  • Auburn, $1.5 million;
  • Fremont, $1.5 million;
  • LaGrange, $1.5 million;
  • LaGrange County, $1.5 million;
  • Noble County, $1.5 million;
  • Steuben County, $1.5 million; and
  • Topeka, $975,000.

"Our Hoosier communities are linked by many roadways that are critical to supporting local businesses and key industries," said State Rep. Tony Isa (R-Angola). "It's exciting to see local counties among the award recipients and moving forward I encourage even more communities to apply for this state grant program."

State Rep. Ben Smaltz (R-Auburn) said to qualify for funding, smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities must provide a 50 percent match. The state requires 50 percent of available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or less. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $2 billion to improve local roads and bridges.

"Community Crossings matching grants support essential improvements to ensure safer travel and more efficient infrastructure for Hoosiers, visitors and businesses," Smaltz said. "I'm thrilled to see my community leaders taking advantage of this state funding to improve the roadways in our area."
