STATEHOUSE (April 22, 2022) – Local communities will receive more than $1.4 million in state matching grants for road and bridge improvement projects, according to Morgan County lawmakers.

In total, 223 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $107 million in state funding through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds, awarded twice a year, are for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage, and can cover material costs for chip sealing and crack filling operations.

"Maintaining our roadways means safer travel for Hoosiers, businesses and tourists, as well as opportunities for more economic development," said State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. "Keeping our state prepared for further growth has been, and continues to be, a legislative priority."

Area grant recipients include Morgan County $697,393 and Martinsville $719,535.

"Community Crossings is a prime example of what can be accomplished when state and local government work together," said State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle), also a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. "These partnerships have helped revitalize so many parts of Indiana, and will continue to do so for years to come."

As part of the grant program, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. To date, Hoosier communities are on the receiving end of more than $1 billion in Community Crossings Matching Grants.

"Our fully-funded roads plan was designed to avoid passing a burden of debt onto the next generation of Hoosiers, and it is succeeding," said State Rep. John Young (R-Franklin). "The funding is critical to moving ahead on projects our local communities need to improve their roads, bridges and other related infrastructure, and these funds have helped communities in our area both large and small."

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, which oversees and awards the grants, the next call for projects is expected in July. More information can be found at in.gov/indot/communitycrossings or by emailing LPAQuestions@indot.in.gov.
