STATEHOUSE (Aug. 27, 2021) – Whether studying economics, telecommunications or history, Morgan County legislators said local college students and recent graduates can gain valuable hands-on work experience by interning with Indiana House Republicans at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.
"This internship is a tremendous opportunity to establish professional contacts and develop skills that will serve students well in their future careers," said State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville). "Now that college classes have resumed, it is the perfect time to meet with your academic advisor, plan for the spring semester and apply for our program."
According to State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle), internship positions are open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. Students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, communications and media relations, policy and fiscal policy.
"There are so many aspects to executing a successful legislative session – from studying and understanding policy to helping constituents and working with the media," Baird said. "Our interns are essential to these operations, and they can learn so much through the process that will benefit them personally and professionally."
State Rep. John Young (R-Franklin) said interns will work at the Statehouse in Indianapolis for the duration of the 2022 legislative session, which kicks off in January and concludes mid-March. The paid, spring-semester positions are full time, Monday through Friday. Interns receive biweekly compensation of $750, free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and can earn academic credit through their college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"Interning at the Statehouse jumpstarts careers and sets individuals apart in a crowded applicant pool," Young said. "We've had very talented young professionals from our community participate in our internship program who have gone on to successful careers. I hope to see more local students join us during the upcoming legislative session."
