Morgan County farms recognized by state with Hoosier Homestead awards

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 14, 2025) – Morgan County area farms recently received Hoosier Homestead awards, according to State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) and Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville).

"The Hoosier Homestead awards reflect the strength of our agricultural heritage," Mayfield said. "These families are the heart of our state's history and economy. These awards are a meaningful way to honor their generations of grit, sacrifice and service to their communities."

Hoosier Homestead awards honor farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years with centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial awards.

"To have generations of a family own, maintain and work the same plot of farmland for 100 years and beyond is no small feat," Bray said. "Morgan County has a rich farming and agriculture tradition, and I want to commend these families on all they have accomplished in the past 100 years and beyond, and likewise wish them continued success as they carry on operations."

The following farms received Hoosier Homestead awards:

• The McGinnis Farm, in operation since 1898, received a centennial award;
• The Shumaker Farm, in operation since 1826, received a sesquicentennial award; and
• The John Gregory Farm, in operation since 1897, received a centennial award.

These farm families were among 95 awardees recently honored during a ceremony at the Indiana State Fair. Click here to view photos from the event.

Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. Since establishing the program in 1976, Indiana has recognized more than 6,000 farms for their economic and cultural impact to the state.
