STATEHOUSE (June 18, 2020) – Monroe County and local communities are eligible for more than $7.7 million to cover COVID-19-related expenses through the federal stimulus package, according to local lawmakers.

"Fighting this virus does not come without economic consequences," said State Rep. Jeff Ellington (R-Bloomington). "So many local officials have worked tirelessly to keep Hoosiers safe, and I'm grateful this funding is available to help our local governments recover."

According to State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) Indiana allocated $300 million in federal funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economics Security Act to counties and communities for reimbursement of expenditures related to the pandemic. She said the funding, allocated based on population, cannot be used to replace lost tax revenue.

"Responding to this public health crisis has caused many Hoosier communities to incur unexpected expenses," Mayfield said. "Swift action has been imperative to combating this virus, and this funding can help communities offset some of those associated costs."

Monroe County is eligible for $4,766,543 in reimbursement funding. In addition, the following communities are also eligible to receive the following amounts:

  • Bloomington $2,757,105;
  • Ellettsville $216,594; and
  • Stinesville $7,040.

State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) said local townships seeking reimbursement for eligible COVID-19 expenses should coordinate with their county government.

"We are starting to see signs of recovery from this public health crisis, but many communities have taken a financial hit trying to mitigate its effects," Heaton said. "This funding can help offset some of those unexpected costs."

The Indiana Finance Authority is in charge of implementing guidelines on how each county, city and town can use the funding, as well as compiling reimbursement requests through accepted documentation including invoices. Visit for more information.
