STATEHOUSE (April 10, 2024) Monroe County and local communities can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by local legislators.

A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.

"Communities both rural and urban can use these matching grants to make essential upgrades to their infrastructure," said State Rep. Dave Hall (R-Norman). "Keeping our roads and bridges up to date makes Indiana safer and more economically viable."

Area grant recipients include Bloomington ($745,893), Ellettsville ($208,111) and Monroe County ($1.5 million).

"A reliable transportation network is vital to keeping our communities safe," said State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute). "Thanks to this program, Indiana has some of the best roads and bridges in the nation, ensuring that our reputation as the Crossroads of America is well-deserved."

"It's essential that Hoosier communities of any size maintain their transportation infrastructure," said State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville). "Community Crossings grants help with the cost of these sometimes major projects that some towns and counties couldn't pursue on their own or in a timely way."

To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
