STATEHOUSE (Feb. 28, 2018)  According to State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart), the Indiana Department of Homeland Security is urging Hoosiers to report uninsured damage from the severe storms and flooding.

“If Hoosiers fill out their damage reports, local emergency management agencies and IDHS will be able to determine the extent of the damage and if federal or state assistance is necessary in each community,” Miller said. “I encourage anyone who had significant damage to fill out the report as soon as possible.”

Due to the historical levels of rainfall, Gov. Eric Holcomb declared a disaster emergency for 22 counties throughout Indiana, including Elkhart. This declaration allows the IDHS to take necessary actions to provide emergency services to areas in the state that are in need.

Miller said once property owners start to assess damages, it is important to look out for potential scams.  To avoid becoming a victim, double check a company’s credentials and history before booking or paying for services. Report any fraud to the Indiana Attorney General’s Office at www.in.gov/attorneygeneral.
