STATEHOUSE (Jan. 18, 2018) — The House Committee on Local Government today supported Rep. Doug Miller’s (R-Elkhart) proposal that would help counties save on court operating costs.
Miller said House Bill 1140 would allow a county to enter into an interlocal agreement with a city to handle ordinance violations. The city court, a venue accustomed to handling ordinance violations, would have jurisdiction rather than the county’s trial court.
“In the course of the last 12 months, discussions with local government coupled with research on how other jurisdictions handle ordinance violation enforcement, led to the development of this legislation,” Miller said. “This bill would help consolidate local ordinance issues and violations to a single city court within the county. It would ease the workload placed on our county trial courts and allow for cost savings by both the cities and counties involved. I look forward to bringing this discussion to the full House.”
Miller said with this bill, code enforcement will now have an option to deal with habitual zoning and ordinance offenders in a more timely way.
