STATEHOUSE (March 6, 2018) — State Rep. Doug Miller’s (R-Elkhart) bill that would help counties save on operating costs by consolidating ordinance violations could soon be law.
Miller said this legislation would allow a county to enter into an interlocal agreement with a municipal corporation that has established an ordinance violations bureau.
“Elkhart County’s attorney has been working on this legislation for the past 18 months because many of the county’s infractions come from repeat offenders,” Miller said. “For example, there is a 10-day window for ongoing garage sales, and there are individuals who have been having an ongoing garage sale for three months. These violators are being fined; however, county courts are unable to properly enforce the penalties for these offenses due to their large workloads. The purpose of this bill is aimed at helping with the enforcement aspect of the ordinance.”
House Enrolled Act 1140 now advances to the governor for consideration. For more information, visit iga.in.gov.
