Miller, Nisly remind local residents to complete census

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 4, 2020) – According to State Reps. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) and Curt Nisly (R-Milford), 2020 census responses are critical to future federal funding in local communities, and Hoosiers should respond now if they have not already done so.

Door-to-door visits are taking place around the country to remind residents to complete their 2020 Census forms. Miller said Indiana is ranked 10th in the nation for total responses collected, but the Census Bureau is still waiting to hear from approximately 1 in every 10 households.

"The census takes just a few minutes to complete, and plays an important role in determining the funding Indiana and local communities receive over the next 10 years," Miller said. "I encourage those who have not yet submitted their response to do so now."

Miller encourages residents to visit 2020census.gov to fill out the census online. Hoosiers can also call 844-330-2020 or mail back the questionnaire sent to households.

Census takers have also begun visiting nonresponding households to ensure every resident is counted.

"Hoosiers have less than a month to complete the census," Nisly said. "Ensuring everyone in our area is counted will help local and state leaders better understand what communities need and how we can provide the best support for them."

Census workers will wear masks and follow local public health guidelines when they visit households. All census takers complete a virtual COVID-19 training on social distancing, and other health and safety protocols before beginning their work in neighborhoods.

According to Nisly, billions of dollars in federal funding to support education, housing, health and public safety are on the line as this data impacts strategic planning decisions about statewide job training, locations of new businesses and public transportation projects.

Self-responses are due by Sept. 30, 2020.
