STATEHOUSE (Feb. 22, 2017) – The Indiana House of Representatives Tuesday voted unanimously in support of State Rep. Doug Miller’s (R-Elkhart) bill that would require manufactured home dealers to be licensed through the Secretary of State.
Miller said manufactured homes, also known as mobile homes, are prefabricated housing that are largely assembled in factories and then transported to home sites.
“As the RV and manufactured-home capitol of the world, we know this industry has changed dramatically,” Miller said. “It used to be that these homes were sold by dealerships, like auto dealers with vast inventories. Now almost all manufactured homes are sold in manufactured housing communities rather than from a dealer lot. We want Hoosier home dealers to now work with the Secretary of State to provide protections not only for consumers, but for themselves.”
Until recently, manufactured home dealers and their services division were under the control of the BMV. The division was recently redirected to voluntarily work with the Secretary of State to obtain licenses to sell. Miller’s bill would require them to go through the office of the Secretary of State, which is in change of chartering and registering businesses, among other responsibilities.
