STATEHOUSE (April 4, 2019) – On My Way Pre-K applications for the 2019-2020 school year are now available for Elkhart County 4-year-olds, according to State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart).
On My Way Pre-K is Indiana’s early childhood education pilot program that provides grants to 4-year-olds from low-income families to attend a high-quality pre-K program. Eligible families must have an income below 127 percent of the federal poverty level; the child must be 4 years old by Aug. 1, 2019, and starting kindergarten in the 2020-2021 school year; and a parent or guardian in the household must be working, going to school or attending job training.
“Providing young children early learning experiences better prepares them for success in school and in life,” Miller said. “Preschool offers many benefits, from learning numbers to gaining important social skills. Elkhart County families should apply so their children can take part in this beneficial program.”
Lawmakers supported legislation creating the On My Way Pre-K pilot program, to offer early education opportunities to 4-year-olds from low-income families, with Miller voting to expand the program. Since 2015, more than 8,000 Hoosier children have attended preschool through On My Way Pre-K.
Miller said space is limited, and families should apply early. For more information and to apply, visit www.OnMyWayPreK.org. Families may also call 1-800-299-1627 for assistance.
