STATEHOUSE (March 2, 2018) — A bill sponsored by State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) that would allow the use of a new technology developed in Indiana to help deliver mobile and modular homes now moves to the governor’s desk.
According to Miller, a new method of delivering mobile and modular homes using disposable, one-time use trailers was recently developed in Indiana. He said this new technology results in considerably lighter loads, reducing wear and tear on highways and cheaper fuel costs. The disposable trailers are also fully recyclable. However, neither this type of delivery method nor trailer system is recognized under Indiana law.
Senate Enrolled Act 375 would allow this technology to be used to deliver manufactured housing within the state. Under this proposal, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles would be required to issue a transport operator license plate that would be temporarily affixed to the disposable trailer while transporting a mobile or modular home. Once that trailer has been used, the transport operator license plate would be removed and applied to another unit ready for delivery. Since these trailers are only used once, they would not require registration like a traditional trailer.
“The manufactured housing industry is an important component of our economy, and this new, more efficient method of delivering modular homes was designed by a local company,” Miller said. “This legislation provides for a commonsense solution in which a special license plate can be applied and removed from these disposable trailers without requiring all of the registration costs and paperwork of conventional truck trailers.”
