Area policymakers, Brainpower focus on the skills gap
STATEHOUSE (Oct. 20, 2016) – State Rep. Ron Bacon (R-Chandler), State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) and State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) recently joined Brainpower on Legislative Day to focus on shrinking the skills gap.
The Southwest lawmakers were included in this year’s Innovative Conversation presented by Brainpower, a sub-committee of the I-69 Consortium comprised of businesses, industries and educational institutions. STIMULUS Engineering, a small business and Department of Defense contractor, hosted the event.
“Indiana is an economic leader,” Bacon said. “When looking at our state’s strong fiscal position, the skills gap is an area we can focus on in order to continue moving Indiana forward.”
“Conversations about the skills gap require input from a variety of stakeholders,” McNamara said. “Policymakers, universities, employers, economic development agencies and school corporations have to be part of the solution.”
Legislative Day, facilitated by former Lt. Gov. and Ivy Tech Community College President Dr. Sue Ellspermann, fostered conversations about the workforce pipeline and building a labor pool to close skill and attrition gaps faced by regional industry.
“Indiana is creating high-paying jobs at a fast pace, but it’s important that we have the workforce to fill those jobs,” Messmer said. “By closing the skills gap, we will be able to ensure that people here in Indiana will be qualified to fill those jobs and able to provide a good life for themselves and their families.”
“We appreciate being included in these important discussions,” McNamara said. “Much like what I stressed in my presentation, addressing the skills gap requires teamwork. Local input is vital, and I encourage the public to work with their elected officials to address issues they are facing.”
