STATEHOUSE (Jan. 17, 2025) – State Rep. Julie McGuire (R-Indianapolis) filed legislation to establish a tuition supplement fund for Hoosiers serving as reserves in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Under McGuire's legislation, Hoosiers serving in a reserve role for the U.S. Armed Forces who attend a state educational institution would be eligible for a scholarship covering full tuition costs for up to four years through the Reservist Tuition Supplement Fund. Reservists pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree would be eligible to apply.
"The Reservist Tuition Supplement Fund is a way to give back to those who are willing to give their lives for this country," McGuire said. "This is an impactful way to allow our reservists the opportunity to continue their education and benefit themselves, their families and Indiana communities as a whole."
Eligible reservists already receiving financial aid could receive a scholarship equal to their remaining tuition balance through the fund. Recipients would have to maintain a satisfactory cumulative grade point average as deemed by their school.
If implemented, the program could provide an estimated $1.5 million in grants to more than 300 Hoosier reservists annually.
