STATEHOUSE (Feb. 6, 2018) — The House of Representatives supported State Reps. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) and John Young’s (R-Franklin) legislation that would give Morgan County a voice on the Indianapolis Airport Authority board.
Under this legislation, Morgan County would be added as a full-voting member on the Indianapolis Airport Authority board. Currently, the member representing Morgan County is limited to an advisory role and does not have a vote.
“The Indianapolis International Airport is a major economic driver in our region, and Morgan County lies adjacent to the airport, directly in the flight path of arrivals and departures,” Mayfield said. “Over the last decade, other counties that originally played only an advisory role have been given voting positions on the board. Because of our close proximity, it is important that our voice is heard concerning decisions that impact our community.”
According to Young, the noise of flyovers, traffic congestion and environmental factors from the airport impact Morgan County. With the Indianapolis International Airport attracting more domestic and international flights, as well as air cargo, both Mayfield and Young said Morgan County needs to be able to contribute to board discussions concerning regional economic development and planning.
“The Indianapolis Airport sees nearly 150 flights every day,” Young said. “With the airport continuously adding flights and attracting more visitors, our community will continue to see side effects from our close proximity. Adding Morgan County as a voting member to the board allows our community to actively participate in the decision-making process, keeping our resident’s concerns at the forefront.”
According to the Indianapolis Airport Authority, the Weir Cook Terminal accommodated 8.4 million passengers during 2017. Averaging 145 daily departures, the airport serves 51 nonstop domestic and international destinations.
State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) represents House District 60, which includes portions of Morgan and Monroe counties and is the Assistant Majority Floor Leader.
