STATEHOUSE (March 11, 2021) – Longstanding Martin County farms recently received Hoosier Homestead Centennial awards for being in operation for over 100 years, according to local lawmakers.

The Beasley Farm and the Turpin Farm have been in operation since 1902 and 1921, respectively.

"Farmers don't clock out at 5 p.m. and take weekends off. It's a full-time job that requires a lot of hard work, sacrifice and technical know-how to be successful," said State Rep. Jeff Ellington (R-Bloomington). "I truly appreciate the love of tradition and respect for our agricultural heritage that can be seen through these farm families and so many others in our community. It's encouraging to see Hoosier farmers maintain and grow their family business while overcoming one challenge after another."

The families were among 51 farms recognized at the Indiana State Museum for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.

"Throughout Indiana’s history, agriculture has been firmly rooted in our heritage, and family farms continue to be an important part of our economy,” said State Sen. Eric Bassler (R-Washington). “These families are pillars in our state, and I thank them for their hard work and dedication.”

"As the 10th largest farming state, it's clear our farmers are a vital part of Indiana's economy," said State Rep. Shane Lindauer (R-Jasper). "Hoosiers who have kept their family farm operating for the last century show a strong commitment to meeting the demands of the industry and the needs of our state."

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. Families can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial awards.

Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program, visit
