STATEHOUSE (Aug. 18, 2022) – The Keller & Hewitt Farm in Martin County recently received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award for being in operation since 1881, according to State Rep. Shane Lindauer (R-Jasper) and State Sen. Eric Bassler (R-Washington).
"It's important we don't take for granted the work our farmers, past and present, have put into Hoosier land," Bassler said. "I admire these families and their willingness to continue the tradition of those who came before them."
The Keller & Hewitt Farm was among more than 100 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"These longtime farm families contribute greatly to our area's economy and culture," Lindauer said. "Thriving for more than 100 years is no small feat and these Hoosiers deserve recognition."
Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. Since its inception in 1976, more than 5,800 farms received the designation as Hoosier Homesteads.
