STATEHOUSE (Dec. 12, 2024) – Marion County legislators recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.

House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms.

State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) was reappointed as chair of the House Education Committee and will serve as a member of the House Public Health Committee.

"With education funding comprising nearly half of the state budget, it's imperative we invest those tax dollars wisely to ensure Hoosier children are receiving the best academics possible," Behning said. "We will continue our work to empower parents to send their students to the school of their choice while ensuring teachers and administrators have the tools to prepare future generations for success."

State Rep. Julie McGuire (R-Indianapolis) will serve as vice chair of the House Public Health Committee, and as a member of the House Education Committee and the House Insurance Committee. McGuire said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.

"Education and health care are two of the biggest components in Indiana's continued success," McGuire said. "I look forward to seeking and considering new ideas to improve Hoosiers' health and make sure our children are prepared for life after graduation."

State Rep. Andrew Ireland (R-Indianapolis), elected to his first term in November, will serve as a member of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, the House Education Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.

"I'm looking forward to diving into the critical issues facing our state this session including tackling violent crime in our capital city and expanding choices in education to all families," Ireland said. "I'm ready to hit the ground running and will work hard to represent the values of Hoosiers in my district."

State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers) was reappointed chair of the House Judiciary Committee and will serve as a member of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee and the House Utilities, Energy and Telecommunications Committee.

"The judiciary committee will continue its work to ensure Indiana’s courts and criminal justice system protects public safety and all Hoosiers," Jeter said. "As an attorney, I look forward to leaning into my experience as we examine complex issues and identify ways our state can improve."

House lawmakers are scheduled to convene at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 8 for the first day of the 2025 legislative session. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
