STATEHOUSE (Dec. 20, 2018) – Local students who want to learn more about state government are encouraged to participate in the Indiana House Page Program during the 2019 legislative session.

“This learning opportunity provides students the chance to spend the day at our state Capitol and interact with their local leaders,” said State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis). “Throughout the day, pages help staff organize the House Chamber for session, work on age-appropriate tasks, and spend time with lawmakers.”

According to State Rep. Dave Frizzell (R-Indianapolis), those who are between the ages of 13 to 18 can spend a day at the Statehouse in Indianapolis helping staff and local legislators, touring government offices, and learning how state laws are made.

“There’s no better place to learn about our state government,” Frizzell said. “As a House page, students have a front-row seat witnessing the legislative process and meeting with state leaders.”

With a limited number page positions available, State Rep. Cindy Kirchhofer (R-Beech Grove) said interested students should apply early to reserve a spot.

“Meeting with local students and showing them where laws are made is always an exciting time,” Kirchhofer said. “Within our community, we have many future leaders who are already civically engaged, and I highly recommend they take advantage of this opportunity.”

State Rep. Mike Speedy (R-Indianapolis) said student pages receive an excused absence from school and groups can participate together.

“Each year, we have many students from our community visit the Statehouse as a page,” Speedy said. “This is an excellent program for young Hoosiers who are interested in current events and social studies. During their time at the state Capitol, they will be able to see their state government in action.”

The 2019 legislative session begins Thursday, Jan. 3, and must conclude by April 30.
