STATEHOUSE (Aug. 30, 2023) – Local lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.
According to State Rep. Kyle Pierce (R-Anderson), House interns will be paid $900 bi-weekly as they work in downtown Indianapolis during session, which starts in January and concludes mid-March.
"As a former staff member for the House and now as a legislator, I've worked side by side with interns who were integral to legislative operations during session," Pierce said. "The role they play and the experience they gain through this internship cannot be overstated, and I look forward to working with students again come January."
State Rep. Elizabeth Rowray (R-Yorktown) said House internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors.
"With today's competitive job market, an internship can give job applicants an edge over other candidates," Rowray said. "Students will be able to build on their skills and gain real-world work experience during the legislative session, all while being paid."
"Internships are critical to developing time management, communication and writing skills that will be used in any career," said State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers). "I encourage students to apply for this opportunity where they will build their resumes and make lifelong professional connections."
Paid, spring-semester intern positions are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"The Statehouse internship is truly a one-of-a-kind experience," said State Rep. Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield). "Interns get a first-hand look at the legislative process, and opportunities to build upon their skills, which will give them leg up when applying for jobs."
According to State Rep. Lori Goss-Reaves (R-Marion), students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, policy, communications, and media relations.
"The connections you build during college can make all the difference when starting a career of your own," Goss-Reaves said. "This internship is a great way to network with state lawmakers, policy advocates and private-sector employers."
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
