STATEHOUSE (April 13, 2023) – Local communities are set to receive over $2.4 million to complete much-needed road projects, according to area legislators.
Funding is available through the state's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, which can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items. In total, 224 towns, cities and counties will receive over $133.4 million in state matching grants.
"Our community offers quick access to two of Indiana's major roadways, so ensuring we have reliable infrastructure is a necessity," said State Rep. Kyle Pierce (R-Anderson). "I look forward to seeing Madison County and Anderson move forward on much-needed projects."
"Indiana is a national leader when it comes to infrastructure investments, unlike other states that struggle with paying for critical road improvements," said State Rep. Elizabeth Rowray (R-Yorktown). "Road construction projects are necessary, yet costly. With these grants, locals have a dedicated funding source they can turn to as they make sure our roads are reliable for years to come."
Area grant recipients include:
"The Community Crossings Grant Program has funded necessary projects, especially in our rural communities, for many years now," said State Rep. Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield). "These dollars continue to be put to good use as we make sure our local roads and bridges are safe and functioning now and in the future."
"Through this state and local partnership, communities large and small can continue making much-needed infrastructure improvements," said State Rep. Ann Vermilion (R-Marion). "These ongoing and strong investments in our roads help attract job providers and talent to our area so that we can boost the economy."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.27 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
"Indiana is in a strong financial position where we can continue investing in essential, local infrastructure projects," said State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers). "This program has helped immensely in preserving Indiana's reputation as the Crossroads of America."
