STATEHOUSE (April 11, 2024) – Madison County and local communities can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by local legislators.
A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.
"The Community Crossings program is a great example of how the state and locals can join forces to address important needs like infrastructure," said State Rep. Lori Goss-Reaves (R-Marion). "By taking advantage of this opportunity, towns, cities and counties can make repairs and improvements more quickly."
"These grants are a reflection of Indiana's commitment to improving our local roads whether that's neighborhood streets or rural highways," State Rep. Elizabeth Rowray (R-Yorktown) said. "Having quality infrastructure in place is not only a benefit to residents but these investments are needed for economic development."
Area grant recipients include:
"Indiana's infrastructure is one of the best in the nation, and these matching grants are one of the many reasons why," said State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers). "This program relieves some of the financial strain many cities and counties feel from increases in road maintenance costs."
"By prioritizing funding for road maintenance, we are ensuring safer roadways for residents and businesses," State Rep. Kyle Pierce (R-Anderson). "Prioritizing maintenance and making improvements is an investment in our future, especially as we look to attract talent and economic opportunities to our area."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
"The Community Crossings funding will go a long way in maintaining our local roadways," said State Rep. Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield), vice chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for crafting the state budget. "Communities big and small are getting the help they need to address issues and plan for future thanks to this program."
