STATEHOUSE (Jan. 19, 2023) – Madison County lawmakers invite local students to spend a day serving as a House page at the Indiana Statehouse during the 2023 legislative session.
According to State Rep. Kyle Pierce (R-Anderson), Hoosier students ages 13 to 18 can sign up to page, and assist lawmakers and staff with daily duties while touring the governor's office, the Indiana Supreme Court, and House and Senate chambers.
"Madison County is home to many bright students, and I encourage them to participate in the House Page Program," Pierce said. "Jumpstarting interest in public service at a young age is very important and helps develop future leaders."
State Rep. Elizabeth Rowray (R-Yorktown) said pages will receive an excused absence from school and can participate as groups, such as Girl Scouts troops.
"Of all my duties as a representative, having local students joining me during the legislative session is one of my favorites," Rowray said. "From FFA and student council members, as well as siblings and individuals, we welcome our students, as they bring energy to the Statehouse."
"I've had many great pages help me throughout my time as a lawmaker," said State Rep. Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield). "Pages have a jam-packed day at the Statehouse and it's an incredible learning opportunity for students."
State Rep. Ann Vermilion (R-Marion) said Hoosiers can visit indianahouserepublicans.com/pageprogram or call 1-800-382-9841 to sign up their student to participate.
"I look forward to welcoming local students to the Capitol each year," Vermilion said. "Visiting the Statehouse is such a great way to expand what they've learned in the classroom. I encourage local students to sign up soon, as spots fill up fast."
Opportunities to page are available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout session, which began on Jan. 9 and must conclude by the end of April. Students are responsible for their lunch, and transportation to and from the Statehouse.
