STATEHOUSE (Oct. 19, 2026) – State Rep. Danny Lopez (R-Carmel) presented Carmel teens Maddox Larger and Grant Larger with Distinguished Hoosier Awards for their heroic actions saving a grandmother and two young children from a retention pond in Carmel. Lopez was joined by State Rep. Victoria Garcia Wilburn (D-Fishers).
Lopez said the two brothers acted quickly after seeing a stroller roll into the pond and a grandmother struggling in the water. They helped the family out of the pond and, after discovering a 2-year-old child was still in the stroller, went back in the water to bring the child to shore and provide CPR until the child resumed breathing.
"Carmel is fortunate to have young people like Maddox and Grant who put others first and stepped up when their neighbors needed help most," Lopez said. "Their courage and quick thinking helped save lives, and they exemplify the very best of our community. I'm proud to recognize these brothers as outstanding young Hoosiers."
Grant Larger is an eighth grader at Clay Middle School and Maddox Larger is a freshman at Carmel High School. The Carmel City Council also plans to recognize the brothers at its Nov. 16 meeting.
