STATEHOUSE (Feb. 23, 2017) — Local graduates are gaining experience as interns with State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) and his fellow members of the House of Representatives during the 2017 legislative session.

Laura Hauersperger, a resident of Hayden, is the daughter of Bernard and Cari Hauersperger. She is an Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis senior majoring in journalism, with a concentration in public relations, and minoring in political science.

As an intern in the House Majority Communications Office, Hauersperger helps write press releases, create legislative handouts and set up press conferences.

Ashlee Morris, a resident of North Vernon, is the daughter of Billy and Kristi Morris. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University Purdue University Columbus and majored in psychology. Morris is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.

As a legislative intern, Morris corresponds with constituents through phone calls, letters and emails. She also helps staff committee hearings and floor proceedings.

“This internship offers hands-on experiences for young adults,” Lucas said. “The Indiana Statehouse is the place to be for students and graduates who have an interest in politics and want the opportunity to be more engaged in their state government.”

The House of Representatives offers paid internship opportunities to college students, law-school students, graduate students and recent college graduates for the duration of each legislative session.
