Local legislators: St. Joseph County businesses honored for operating 50, 100 years

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 2, 2022) — Several St. Joseph County businesses recently received the Governor’s Half-Century or Century Business awards recognizing their longstanding service in the community, according to local lawmakers.

"Owning and operating a business takes a lot of hard work and determination," said State Rep. Dale DeVon (R-Granger). "These businesses are great examples of perseverance. I'll continue to support a business-friendly environment where employers want to stay and expand."

DeVon said these St. Joseph County businesses were among 47 companies and organizations recognized during a ceremony in Indianapolis for remaining in continuous operation in Indiana for at least 50 or 100 years, and demonstrating a commitment to serving the community:

• Niezgodski Plumbing Inc., operating for 100 years, received the Governor’s Century Business Award;
• South Bend Medical Foundation Inc., operating for 110 years, received the Governor’s Century Business Award; 
• Shaffner Heaney Associates Inc., operating for 51 years, received the Governor’s Half-Century Business Award; and
• South Bend Orthopaedics, operating for 75 years, received the Governor's Half-Century Business Award.

"Customers don't always see the work that goes on behind-the-scenes of running a business," said State Rep. Jake Teshka (R-South Bend). "So many people put in a great deal of time and effort to keep their company up and running, while satisfying customers along the way. I'm thankful that these employers call St. Joseph County home."

These local employers now join the more than 1,200 Hoosier businesses that received this recognition throughout the award's 31-year history.

"Local employers help drive innovation and growth in our Hoosier communities," said State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola). "With these awards, Indiana is recognizing the immense contributions made by longstanding businesses. Congratulations to the award recipients and I wish them continued success."
