STATEHOUSE (Nov. 8, 2023) – Over $8 million in state funding is in route to Northeast Indiana communities to help complete road and bridge projects, according to area legislators.
State funding is available for local projects through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, including road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items. In total, over 180 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $91 million in state matching grants.
"The Community Crossings Matching Grant Program is a tremendous benefit for smaller, rural communities as many of them may not be able to move forward on critical projects without this state funding," said State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City). "Having well-maintained roads and other infrastructure are a benefit to everyone in our community."
Area grant recipients include:
"This program gives our small towns the capability to stretch their budgets to make needed improvements to our roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure," said State Rep. Denny Zent (R-Angola). "It's great to see local counties on the list of award recipients and moving forward I hope that more communities apply for this state grant."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.2 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
"The Community Crossings Matching Grants provide significant funding to communities large and small," said State Rep. Ben Smaltz (R-Auburn). "Seeing more than $4.3 million coming into the area I represent will help local units of government accomplish much-needed projects. This funding will certainly continue to improve our local roads and streets.”
