STATEHOUSE (May 10, 2023) – The Columbus Learning Center is set to receive more than $10 million from the state's next two-year budget to continue its operations, according to local legislators.
Located in northern Columbus, the center is home to multiple universities, including Indiana University, Purdue University, Ivy Tech, Purdue Polytechnic School and others. The building, owned by the Columbus Board of Aviation Commission, is currently leased by the CLC and the state subleases the property to create opportunities for universities and others to host classes in the facility.
State Rep. Ryan Lauer's (R-Columbus) said the new state funding will go toward paying off the center's debts and allow for a 10-year extension of the sublease, which was expected to conclude in 2025. Lauer originally crafted the legislation to provide the funding and extend the lease, but the language was ultimately amended into the budget bill, House Enrolled Act 1001.
"This center has been a home for local Hoosiers to learn and grow for more than two decades," Lauer said. "Through this investment, we can ensure the campus still has a home here while providing a way to invest in the future."
The 43,000 square-foot campus is home to more than 4,000 students and offers work-based learning opportunities, including certificates, degrees, and training in advanced manufacturing and other technology-related fields.
"Our state and our local communities need more work-based learning opportunities to better compete into today's economy, and this center plays an important role for the Columbus region," said State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville). "Education hubs like these provide students with the ability to skill up close to home and the flow of talent benefits local employers."
State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) said the CLC helps provides invaluable support to Columbus' economy and workforce pipeline. According to the Community Education Coalition, more than 80% of graduates stay and work in Bartholomew County after completing school.
"As I travel our area and talk with employers, one of the top concerns I hear about is the ability to find and attract workers," Lucas said. "The Columbus Learning Center brings educators, businesses, communities and students together, and it's an excellent opportunity to help bridge this gap."
