STATEHOUSE (Nov. 5, 2021) – Local communities will receive more than $1 million in state matching grants to steer toward much-needed road improvement projects, according to Cass County lawmakers.

State Rep. Don Lehe (R-Brookston) said 218 towns, cities and counties throughout Indiana received a combined total of over $101 million through the Community Crossings Matching Grant program. Lehe supported legislation establishing the program in 2016 and its expansion in 2017. The Indiana Department of Transportation oversees and distributes these grants twice each year.

"Investing in our state's infrastructure is key to growing our economy and improving Hoosiers' quality of life," Lehe said. "The funds from this program are helping communities get needed projects done faster, facilitating new economic growth and making our roads safer."

State matching grant recipients include Logansport $794,469 and Walton $302,116.

State Rep. Ethan Manning (R-Logansport) said communities can use these funds for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage.

"The condition of our bridges, roads and sidewalks impacts our safety, convenience and economy," Manning said. "With this funding, communities large and small are now able to make necessary repairs and begin additional infrastructure projects."

According to State Rep. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo), smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities must provide a 50 percent match. State law requires that 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer.

"Winter weather in Indiana is tough on our roads, making repairs necessary," VanNatter said. "Hoosiers in our communities and around the state continue to see significant infrastructure improvements due to this grant program."
